What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel - Median Nerve Distribution

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that occurs when the nerves inside of the wrist become compressed, either through repeated use or due to another disease or condition. It typically affects adults who have developed the condition due to a repetitive movement, usually done as part of a job or hobby.

Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery

Carpal tunnel surgery involves releasing the carpal tunnel ligament. By releasing the carpal tunnel ligament, the carpal tunnel is opened providing more room for the contents of the canal. As a result, the pressure and irritation on the median nerve is within the canal is reduced . There are two main approaches to releasing the carpal tunnel ligament, the traditional approach and endoscopic carpal tunnel release.

Traditional Carpal Tunnel Release

Carpal tunnel release incision

The traditional approach to carpal tunnel release typically involves one or two incisions placed in the wrist/palm area in order to access the transverse carpal ligament. Once the ligament is identified, it is released using a scalpel or scissor under direct vision.

Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release

endoscopic carpal tunnel release

The endoscopic approach involves the use of a special endoscopic camera and instruments which are inserted through multiple small incisions. The camera is attached to a monitor. Release of the transverse carpal ligament is performed while the surgeon visualizes the anatomy on the monitor.
